David Kavanagh

David Kavanagh, a partner in O'Melveny's London office, is a member of the International Practice, concentrating on international arbitration and cross-border litigation. Prior to joining O'Melveny, David was a partner at a leading international firm. David has extensive experience in international finance litigation and his clients include major investment banks and hedge funds for whom David regularly acts in High Court litigation. David's practice includes investment treaty work (most recently acting for the Government of India in its investment treaty dispute with GE and Bechtel) and David has handled some of the world's most notable arbitration cases, including four of the cases noted in The American Lawyer's most recent ranking for the largest arbitration cases worldwide. David has been ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers & Partners (Global and UK editions) and Legal 500.

Notable cases include:
  • Acting for one of the world's leading communications groups in Europe's largest telecoms arbitration relating to an investment worth in excess of €2 billion
  • GE and Bechtel v The Government of IndiaUS$1.6 billion dispute concerning the Dabhol power station
  • Acting for a German bank in connection with a US$35 million High Court dispute concerning an innovative offshore investment fund for sovereign trade credits
  • Advising one of the world's major cruise lines in connection with an arbitration claim against a leading manufacturer of marine propulsion systems
  • Advising a major London-based international hedge fund in a dispute with a former joint venture partner concerning the establishment of an emerging market fund
  • Representing an offshore construction specialist in its US$150 million dispute with an oil major relating to a gas production platform
