JAKARTA, INDONESIA ─ NOVEMBER 8, 2011 ─ O’Melveny & Myers LLP today announced the launch of a formal association with leading Indonesian law firm Tumbuan & Partners. The association will build on the market-leading capabilities of O’Melveny’s Asia offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo.  Singapore-based partner Joel Hogarth will relocate to Jakarta to coordinate the association.

Headed by senior partner Fred B. G. Tumbuan and his daughter Jennifer B. Tumbuan, Tumbuan & Partners is one of the most respected commercial law firms in Indonesia. In addition to Hogarth, O’Melveny senior Indonesian legal counsel Ratih Nawangsari will play a key role in the association. O’Melveny & Myers and Tumbuan & Partners have consistently worked on some of the most high-profile transactions in Indonesia and intend to continue to focus on high-end corporate, finance, and capital markets transactions.

“A presence in Indonesia complements our strengths in Asia and firmwide, and better positions us to serve the needs of our global clients in the important Southeast Asia region. Indonesia is becoming an increasingly important market for many of our clients and we look forward to serving them with our new capabilities in Jakarta,” said Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr., chair of O’Melveny.

Indonesia is poised for growth both locally and internationally.  It is the largest economy in Southeast Asia with a population of close to 250 million people and a growth prediction of 6.5 percent this year. Only China, India, and the US have larger populations.

The association offers a unique combination of quality Indonesian and international representation. Fred Tumbuan is the only Indonesian lawyer recognized as a Senior Statesman for Corporate and M&A law by leading legal directory Chambers & Partners. Fred Tumbuan is a highly respected commercial practitioner, academic, and author who is regularly involved in the drafting of Indonesia’s commercial legislation and serves as an adviser to many Indonesian government departments.

O’Melveny partners Bertie Mehigan and Joel Hogarth have extensive practice experience in  Indonesia and are highly ranked as international counsel for Banking and Finance and Corporate and Commercial transactions in Indonesia. Bertie Mehigan is one of the region’s leading restructuring practitioners, and Joel Hogarth is a regular author and commentator on cross-border transactions involving Indonesia. The prestigious 2011 Chambers Asia rankings called the firm’s restructuring and insolvency work, “Singapore's best-known firm for South-East Asian restructuring and insolvency work [that] continues to focus on Indonesia, where it is heavily involved in major restructurings.” It also highlighted O’Melveny’s “strong reputation for its corporate, banking and finance, restructuring, and capital markets work relating to Indonesia.” O’Melveny also has been named 2011 “Firm of the Year” for M&A and corporate work in Indonesia by ASIAN-MENA COUNSEL.

Commenting on the association, Fred Tumbuan said, “Tumbuan & Partners are delighted to enter into this association with O'Melveny. We have known and worked with Bertie and Joel for many years and we share so many common visions and values — including the importance of integrity and professionalism in the practice of law and a strong work ethic in protecting the interests of our clients. These values and our strong history of working together are key to our association.   Indonesia is a growing economy and we expect to collaborate with the global team from O'Melveny on many matters in the years to come.”

Bertie Mehigan, managing partner of O’Melveny’s Singapore office, added, “We are honored to be associated with Tumbuan & Partners and are extremely excited about the prospects for our association. As individuals, Pak Fred and Jennifer are highly respected colleagues and friends — and as a firm they exemplify O’Melveny’s core values of excellence, leadership, and citizenship. We believe they will be a tremendous resource for our clients. This, combined with having Joel — one of our most dynamic and successful partners — on the ground in Jakarta makes our association unique.”
