O'Melveny Ranks Among Top 30 in Client Service in 2010 BTI Survey

O'Melveny is ranked among the 30 firms clients list as delivering the best service, according to the latest BTI Client Service report.

The Firm has returned to The BTI Client Service 30 after a four-year hiatus in part because of its strength in the areas of geographic reach and breadth of services. According to BTI Consulting Group, which performs the surveys, "the BTI Client Service 30 is the cream of the crop of The BTI Client Service A-Team. These 30 firms perform four to 15 times better than everyone else. BTI scores every firm based on clients’ unprompted feedback, using their rankings of the importance and influence of each of 17 client service activities. Law firms in The BTI Client Service 30 have truly differentiated themselves in the eyes of clients."

The BTI report notes that corporate counsel not only recognize O’Melveny for its client service prowess, but they rank the firm 19th out of more than 500 other law firms serving Fortune 1000 clients. The Firm earned Best of the Best honors in the category of "Brings Together National Resources." In addition, O’Melveny earned accolades for flexibility and responsiveness, garnering Leaders of the Best designations in the "Legal Skills," "Breadth of Services," "Deals with Unexpected Changes," and "Handles Problems" categories.

In a Law360 article about the firms the survey revealed as leaders in the category of legal skills, Firm Chair Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr. (DC) said: "In addition to mastering requisite legal skills, lawyers need to develop the broader perspective, confidence and client service ethic required to counsel clients appropriately." He told the online legal news service that O'Melveny focuses "on training and mentoring programs designed to not only fulfill the continuing legal education and career development needs of lawyers at all levels, but also to develop distinctively well-rounded and talented lawyers."

At a time of growing expectations, this recognition from clients is a considerable achievement and a testament to O'Melveny's ongoing, firmwide efforts toward fulfillment of the goal of superior client service, the BTI results show. BTI reports that clients lauded "O’Melveny’s commitment to superior client service through its focus on client needs and relationships." They also stated that the Firm "puts a lot of emphasis on strong client relations," and "is proactive with ideas that can help us be more successful." Clients also praise O’Melveny's "proven track record," solid legal skills and high-quality attorneys.

BTI’s analysis draws on candid feedback from corporate counsel to determine precisely which law firms top the charts in client service. General Counsel and C-level executives define 17 activities they use to select and evaluate outside counsel. BTI asks corporate counsel to delineate, unprompted, the law firm best at each of the 17 activities driving superior client relationships. BTI interviewed 240 corporate counsel this year at large and Fortune 1000 companies.
